Abstract

JULIO, Kelly Lislie  and  VARTULI, Silvia Maria Amâncio Rachi. "IN YOUR COMPANY": FEMININE STRATEGIES FOR THEIR CHILDREN'S EDUCATIONAL PROCESS VILA RICA, MINAS GERAIS (1770-1830). Educ. Rev. [online]. 2016, vol.32, n.3, pp.91-117. ISSN 1982-6621.  https://doi.org/10.1590/0102-4698153826.

Based on varied sources such as wills, inventories, guardianship accounts, petitions and justifications for guardianship, this work sought to analyze the female strategies to participate in their children's educational process in Vila Rica, Minas Gerais, from 1770 through 1830. To develop this study, we took two situations into account. First, we discussed the family and the roles performed by men and women in a legitimately built family. Secondly, we examined the consequences for the family group in cases where the husband died, regarding management of the estate and the children's handling. Thanks to the analyzed documents' corpus, we perceived that men at that period valued qualities such as capability, affection and honor to allow a woman to take over the administration of the family estate and their children. We concluded especially that the female group at the time knew how to use these qualities to be able to participate in their offspring's education.
