Abstract

MARTINS, BRUNO SENA  and  MOURA, ADRIANO. PORTUGAL AND THE INTERNATIONAL DECADE OF AFRO-DESCENDANTS: EDUCATION AND THE COLONIAL VIOLENCE TIMES. Educ. Rev. [online]. 2018, vol.34, e192750.  Epub Sep 20, 2018. ISSN 1982-6621.  https://doi.org/10.1590/0102-4698192750.

In this article we focus on Portugal, one of the central actors of the infamous transatlantic slave trade and of the colonial processes that defined the modern world. From the Portuguese reality, we signal the urgency of summoning colonial history and its legacies to confront the Eurocentric narratives that insist on thinking of Europe through benevolent visions that portray it, naively, as the homeland of human rights and democracy. Based on this analysis, we assess the potential impact in Portugal of the action plan brought about by the International Decade of Afro-descendants. Particularly, we confront and denounce an educational system that, until this day, actively produces the silencing of racial issues leading to the reproduction of the racial inequalities that mark Portuguese society as a whole.

Keywords : Portugal; Colonial Violence; Racism; Education.
