Abstract

Considering that longitudinal model is the most appropriate method to measure the value-added set on students by school establishments, this article presents the results of some studies related to features of efficient classrooms. The effects of the use of the Portuguese Language textbook have been studied in the learning process of 176 groups of municipal, federal and private schools in Rio de Janeiro, all of them known for their participation in the Geres research; the years of experience the teacher had with said textbook; and the mention the book received in the National Program of Textbook, in 2004. The evidence showed that students who used textbooks were more highly valued and that the benefits were even greater for students whose teachers had more than two years of experience using the same book. The results are articulated with some of the characteristics pointed out in the literature as promoting school efficiency.
