The Bolsa Família Program is a federal cash transfer program targeted on poor families. To be eligible to receive the money these families must fulfill some requirements regarding education and health. In the education field, families must enroll their children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years in school; at least 85% of regular school attendance of children aged 6 to 15 years and 75% for youths 16 to 17 years old is required. This article aims to analyze the effects of these requirements on school attendance for Bolsa Família beneficiaries living in Campinas (SP), based on the 2010 Brazilian Census. The results show that the requirements related to education have a positive effect on increasing school attendance of the beneficiaries. However, at the end of the period of required school attendance established by the program, the numbers fall sharply.
