Abstract

CASTRO, Maria Helena Magalhães. Avaliação institucional para a autogestão: uma proposta. Ensaio: aval. pol. públ. educ. [online]. 1995, vol.03, n.07, pp.157-172. ISSN 0104-4036.

Educational systems and institutions encompass too complex and diverse missions to be subsumed into a single definition of quality. In recent years, the American accreditation system has been adopted by (and adapted to) an increasing number of countries in Eastern Europe, Asia and Latin America, precisely due its non-normative character and demonstrated effectiveness in promoting quality in education. Accreditation envolved into two mechanisms: of accrediting institutions and of accrediting course programs and curricula. Both modalities are carried out by non governmental bodies, have a voluntary and temporary basis, and involve evaluation processes assisted by peers. This article deals with the adequacy, strengths and weaknesses of such a system, particulary, in supporting institutional development towards self-regulation and sustained capacity for improving quality.
