Abstract

SCHWARTZMAN, Jacques  and  OLIVEIRA JUNIOR, Márcio de. "Ranking" IPEAD/UFMG e Exame Nacional de Cursos: uma comparação. Ensaio: aval. pol. públ. educ. [online]. 1997, vol.05, n.16, pp.353-362. ISSN 0104-4036.

This paper compares two ways of evaluating higher education in Brazil. One of them analyses the Schooll's inputs - students, faculty and infra-instructure - using a methodology developed by Schwartzman (1996). The other one is a test token by students at the end of their undergraduate program - the output of education. The Brazilian Deportment of Education (Ministério da Educação - MEC) is in charge of applying the test. The results of both methods of evaluation were available for one area: Management. They were then compared through ranking correlation analysis. The correlation coefficient was positive and high. The conclusion is that both forms of evaluating higher education-through evaluation of input or output - present similar results. A school can be evaluated through a test applied to its students - the output of education - or through the evaluation of its inputs. Which one is to be used depends on several factors, such as costs, the availability of data and information concerning faculty and infra-instructure.
