Abstract

This speech was delivered at the inauguration session of the School of Arts (Languages and Literature) of Oporto, Portugal, in 1995. It deals with a new age characterized by a vertiginous multiplication of machines all over the world and invites universities to think on the problems ahead. The role that the university plays in the relationships between political action and theoretical speculation is emphasized to face the most severe issues in the coming future. The technological era is at the same time irreversible and desirable, but generates undesirable effects that may threaten human survival. Universities should help governments in the definition of far-seeing cultural and educational policies. In order to do those universities need to rescue their essential vision, to value the Humanities, and to be structured in a way that articulates sciences, arts and philosophy in a mutually beneficial relationship.
