Abstract

LOPES, Rosemara Perpetua  and  FURKOTTER, Monica. The Mobile Phone In The University Class: Possibility Or Challenge?. Educ. Rev. [online]. 2023, vol.39, e84255.  Epub Nov 14, 2023. ISSN 1984-0411.  https://doi.org/10.1590/1984-0411.84255.

Based on theoretical assumptions about digital culture, Digital Information and Communication Technologies (DICT), training and teaching work in college courses, we investigate how the undergraduate teacher treats the student use of mobile phone in assroom, what he thinks about technology-enabled teaching, and what knowledge he has about m-learning. We carried out qualitative research by applying a questionnaire answered by 48 graduation course teachers in a São Paulo state public university. Using the content analysis method, we discuss the results along the axes: the mobile phone in the classroom and its consequences; university teaching in times of DICT; and training for the use of DICT provided to students. We found that the use of cell phones in face-to-face classes is allowed by 68.8% and forbidden by 31.2% of the teachers, while those who allow it intervene, trying to make the student aware of the use, which bothers the teacher when it is not part of the planning or disrupts the class. The understanding prevails that the decision to deal with situations involving the use of cell phones in the class is the teacher’s. PowerPoint is what teachers reported using most in class, with no mention of m-learning or related aspects. Concerning the training for using DICT, there is a predominant understanding that the undergraduate courses do not promote this training, despite an existing mandatory discipline aimed at providing it.
