The article reflects on the relationships between the emergence and persistence of social problems and the development of scientific knowledge aimed at explaining and understanding them as keys to understanding current contexts. It focuses on recognizing the constitution and renewal of research agendas in Education based on the introduction of information and communication technologies (ICT) as a prominent factor in educational policies in Latin America. The article presents a thematic systematization of dissertations and theses developed in the Education, Communication and Technologies research group (GEC/UFBA), integrated by a large number of researchers from Latin American countries. The result is a confluence of research that addresses topics that are common to several countries in the region, such as the digital gap, teachers formation, the insertion of technologies in schools in the 1:1 model and open knowledge, all of which are influenced by public policies.

Keywords : research and education; Latin American social context; information and communication technology.
