To correct inequalities among women and men, several states have utilized public policies. Remarking the slow progress attained through these means, the article examines the types of policies that have been designed and put into effect. On the basis of legislation enacted by some developed and developing countries and its aftermath, three types of policies are distinguished: coercive policies, which operate through commands prohibiting undesirable practices; supportive policies, which establish organizational units to promote and monitor gender issues; and constructive policies, which function to create contestatory knowledge and promote new behavior and attitudes. This last set of policies which need funds for their effective implementation - are the policies less often considered by nation states.
