The work shows the issue of social exclusion in the Brazilian higher education system, focusing on one of the exclusion forms that happen at the moment of entrance at the university. The adopted measurement instrument is the socio-economic report filed by students who applied at UFPR in 2002 and 2003. The idea of considering data gathered during two consecutive years aims at assuring more consistency to the data. The study considered data of more than fifty thousand applicants in each of the referred years. The figures show cruel aspects of exclusion, and in general denounce in an explicit way the sad deterioration of the public schools in the country.
