Abstract

This study shows how the elementary school process occurred in the Italian colonies of Alfredo Chaves in Paraná and in São Caetano in São Paulo in the end of XIX century and at the beginning of the XX century. The study analyzes how the first schools were opened and how the school initiatives started; teachers, students, functioning conditions, conflicts and power relations were identified; it also argues about the interest of these immigrants in institutionalized education. Although the two colonial nuclei have passed by a differentiated provincial politics system, many aspects of the colonization, organization and economic, social and cultural formation had presented similarities. The sources used in this study were composed of a variety of documents found in the libraries of public files of the States. The study showed that this process represented aspects that explain the motivation for institutionalized education, the school was a basic element in the integration of the immigrants in the society.
