GUINDANI, Evandro Ricardo; KOGA, Yáscara Michele Neves and GRENDENE, Francine. The Education Development Index Basic and the influences of the socioeconomic reality on student achievement. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2014, vol.19, n.2, pp.133-144. ISSN 1519-3993. https://doi.org/10.1590/edpuc19n201406.
The aim of this research is to contribute to the studies on socioeconomic reality of families and its influence on student achievement within the educational context. The study focuses on the relationship between educational outcomes and socioeconomic indicators. The relationship between socioeconomic status of families and the results achieved by students from the Municipal School Anzollin Angelo in the city of Vargem Bonita, Santa Catarina, on the exam called Prova Brazil indicate that the disparity between the wealth produced in the municipality and the Human Development Index can be crucial for the performance of students taking the Prova Brazil and, particularly for student achievement. The results of the survey helped to understand that the educational success or failure of the student is not just associated with the environment and infrastructure provided by the school, nor only teaching qualification. One needs to address the family, socioeconomic and cultural conditions to grasp the complexity of academic success and failure. The research contributed to a critical reflection on the results of Education Development Index Basic, showing that the quality of education needs to be addressed from a socioeconomic perspective and not simply from a pedagogical perspective.
