Abstract

GODOY, Eliete Aparecida de. The absence of racial issues in initial teacher education and Law 10.639/03. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2017, vol.22, n.1, pp.77-92. ISSN 2318-0870.  https://doi.org/10.24220/P1519-3993-2017220100006.

This study points out the challenges to implement the policies and guidelines for initial teacher education and the role and commitment of higher education institutions that offer Pedagogy courses, through the National Program for Teacher Education, to promote the construction of pedagogical knowledge that enables the future teachers to provide meaning and value to their classes by focusing on different cultures and on the History of Afro-Brazilian and African Culture, as established by Law nº 10.639/03 and regulations derived from it. We discuss the results of the survey carried out in institutions in the state of São Paulo, which had the purpose of identifying if the curriculum of initial teacher training was in compliance with the previously mentioned guidelines on the theme. The analysis of curricula of these institutions showed that the model adopted for teacher training is based on conservative curricula and not open to changes, particularly regarding a deeper debate on African and Afro-Brazilian Culture during teacher education.
