This work is a cutout of the master’s research and it is set up as a case study, from a qualitative approach. It aims to analyze a teaching proposition for the basic literacy and literacy of a primary level 3rd grade group. The teaching proposition, designed from the literary work “Dois Chapéus Vermelhinhos”, written by Ronaldo Simões Coelho and illustrated by Humberto Guimãrães, was developed over the period of four days. The classes were observed, and a field diary was used as a mechanism for data collection, in addition to a photographic record. The theoretical framework which guides the analyses of the work refers to the process of basic literacy and literacy. It was determined that the children’s book, with its textual potential, can be a meaningful tool for teaching reading and writing. Furthermore, it can provide aid for the development of activities that involve textual genres in a contextualized way. At last, the children’s book is understood as a tool which contributes to the processes of literacy and basic literacy.
