This text aims to present an overview of affirmative action policies adopted in graduate studies in Brazil, bringing as an illustrative case the selection processes of Graduate Programs in Education and Teaching at Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (São Paulo State University “Júlio De Mesquita Filho”). Its guiding thread is a qualitative approach, of a descriptive nature, as well as the assumptions of a documentary research. Eleven selection notices were analyzed for admission (between 2022 and 2023) of the programs of the aforementioned areas. As a result, we observed that the affirmative policies adopted by Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” with graduate studies are still incipient, since there is a low rate of programs that provide for affirmative actions with groups that are underrepresented in such spaces. In the case of the education and teaching areas, although advances are perceived, it is assessed that, even in the programs in which affirmative policies are adopted (such as vacancy reservation), there are other mechanisms that have a high potential for excluding different groups from access to Brazilian graduate studies.
