Abstract

GESUELI, Zilda Maria  and  MOURA, Lia de. Letramento e surdez: A visualização das palavras. ETD [online]. 2006, vol.07, n.02, pp.110-122. ISSN 1676-2592.

This study proposes a new way of looking at deaf students’ processes of literacy and their notions of text, highlighting the importance of the visual aspect of reading/writing as a constituent factor in said process. Because of the visual characteristic of sign language, images are meaningful modes in the process of construction of knowledge. Sign language becomes a mark of identity permeating deaf culture, in such a way that the discourse of sign language constitutes the basis for the encounter with writing in the classroom. So, in this context we must both think about concepts of texts and move away from the notion that writing represents oral language. In this way we abandon a graphocentric conception of writing, in favor of considering discursive practices involving language (in this case, written Portuguese). In this approach, visual literacy becomes extremely relevant in the schooling process of the deaf.
