Abstract

ABBONIZIO, Aline Cristina de Oliveira; SOUZA, Amanda De  and  RAMOS, Emerson Luiz. Quilombola identity affirmation in the Quilombo Santa Rita do Bracuí. e-Curriculum [online]. 2016, vol.14, n.2, pp.393-413. ISSN 1809-3876.  https://doi.org/10.23925/1809-3876.2016v14i2p0393.

This article deals with the affirmation of Quilombola identity in the Quilombo Santa Rita do Bracuí, located in Angra dos Reis (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). This information was collected in order to systematize the struggle, unchained in the mid-1990s, for recognition and achievement of their cultural and territorial rights. For this purpose we recovered the historical context of the formation of the current territory of the Quilombo, an old sugar plantation sustained by the work of illegal African slaves. The genesis of the Quilombola identity affirmation is based on hearing the current residents, and this was made together with two Quilombola research assistants residing within the community. We concluded that the Quilombola identity affirmation, by being associated with the struggle for cultural and territorial rights, could be understood as Popular Education, which is, at the same time, a communitarian self-education, a means to political awareness, and a struggle against historical situations of injustice and disrespect.
