CARREIRA, Deniseo and ANDRADE, Leila. Popular education in contexts of deprivation of liberty: the art-education project at casa foundation. e-Curriculum [online]. 2016, vol.14, n.2, pp.414-436. ISSN 1809-3876. https://doi.org/10.23925/1809-3876.2016v14i2p0414.
Would it be possible, in contexts of privation of liberty, to construct and to develop a popular, transforming education? What are the limits, the challenges and the possibilities of these experiences in Brazil, in a society profoundly unequal, which preaches the confinement of human beings, mass incarceration, as a main response do theft offense? Based on the art-education experience developed by the NGO Ação Educativa (Educative Action) at Casa (Fundação Centro de Atendimento Socioeducativa ao Adolescente / Foundation Center for Socioeducational Assistance to Adolescents), a public institution in São Paulo (Brazil) responsible for applying socio-educational measures to adolescents in conflict with the law, this article discusses the paradox: the emancipation of individuals sought by popular education in situations characterized by deprivation of liberty, pedagogy of obedience, the restriction of bodies, and the permanent, systemic and daily violations of human rights.
