Online education has been consolidating itself as an alternative to face educational challenges of the contemporary world, among these the necessity to form autonomous citizens capable of working collaboratively. But can autonomy be developed and broadened in an online course? The objective of the following research was to investigate the process of developing autonomy in learning according to the views of students and tutors in an online course. As the methodology applied was supported by the assumption that the views of the subjects are subjective constructions and, for that reason, must be analyzed in a qualitative perspective, the data was collected through field observation (virtual) and the questionnaires directed to students and tutors. The results allowed to conclude that autonomy is a process that depends upon the determination of the subject but doesn’t become concrete solitarily; it requires responsibility, organization, discipline, maturity and involvement; it is benefitted by the pedagogic mediation.
