Based on the assumptions of the historical-cultural perspective derived from Vygotsky, in the research on reading and writing developed by Applied Linguistics in Brazil, this article describes, discusses, and reflects on the approach of teaching reading and writing skills, by a teacher in pre-service education, together students with learning disabilities. It also aims to reflect on the professor’s mediation in this specific situation. The constitutive corpus of the analyses are the internship reports of a graduate student in Letters-Portuguese, from a public university in the state of Paraná, produced in teaching practices in a Support Classroom for Portuguese Language Learning (SAAPL, in Portuguese), the context in which it carried out the work of observation and action. The analysis demonstrates that, through the teaching experiences in SAALP, mediated by the supervising teacher, the trainee to comprehend the main difficulties of reading and writing of the students, as well as the strategies and approaches to work on them, such as storytelling, shared reading, ordering and sequencing of reading questions, to boost processes of skills development in these students and in herself, while the teacher.
