In this short survey of Descartes’ s life and works , the author insists upon the verbal skill of the philosopher (in French and Latin) to borrow words from scholastic tradition, twisting their meaning to suit his new way of thinking ; he suggests several paths for new research, one of them being to see Descartes through the lenses of his adversaries, in France and in the Netherlands. Not a professional philosopher, a layman, a soldier: many features of Descartes’s life that are not alien to the making of a new philosophy.
