Abstract

DOMINGUES, Chirley. Julie, or the New Heloise: between literature and philosophy. Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2018, vol.32, n.66, pp.1157-1174.  Epub Sep 22, 2020. ISSN 1982-596X.  https://doi.org/10.14393/revedfil.issn.0102-6801.v32n66a2018-08.

The present work aims at presenting an analysis of the novel Julie, or the New Heloise, by Jean Jacques Rousseau. The emphasis of the analysis is on the language of the selected text. The objective is to find, in the fabric of the text, how what is said and what is suggested are interwoven, highlighting, therefore, the potential of the language employed. The richness of the literary (and metaphorical by extension) language indicated me an interesting pathway to develop the abovementioned study. The choice of the novel lies on the observation that the piece transits between literature and philosophy, but its borders disappear and “become internally intricate spaces” (MATTOS, 2008, P.12). In this sense, Fúlvia Moretto defines the piece as “Rousseau’s novel of thought”. Thus, Julie, or the New Heloise allows me to achieve a reading that is not limited to the intelligible, but which takes me through a sensory experience.
