The present text aims to discuss the current Brazilian university setting based on the context of the quota system. Thus, we have used the studies by Ferraro (2011) and Carvalho and Rezende (2012), so that we can encompass the path of the quota student since basic education, highlighting the school trajectory of black boys. Then, we discuss how the positions regarding the quota system happen in the academic circles and how the affirmative action policy here discussed is related to the concept of equity, as proposed by López (2005). From the concept of equity, we conduct a brief history of the quota system introduction in Brazilian universities, emphasizing the isolated actions of some universities until the approval of the Law 12.711, which deals with the quotas national policy. Finally, we discuss the changes that occurred in the university students since the establishment of the quota system and the transformations occurred in the student assistance, not only in terms of resources but also regarding a proposal that no longer encompasses only economical help, it also includes pedagogical and social inclusion of the students in the Brazilian public university system. We highlight that the core purpose of this article is, based on bibliographic research, to establish the various hurdles faced by black and poor students on their path to higher education, and the need to adopt the quota system as a way of dealing with such obstacles.
