Abstract

GASPARELLO, Arlette Medeiros. The nation imagined in textbooks of the nineteenth century. Cad. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2015, vol.14, n.1, pp.39-53.  Epub Mar 20, 2024. ISSN 1982-7806.  https://doi.org/10.14393/che-v14n1-2015-3.

This paper analyzes the different ways of imagining the Brazilian nation, and focuses on the historic creation of this nation in history textbooks of Brazil. The main sources of analysis were the Brazilian History books published for high school in the early decades of the nineteenth century. These books correspond to the first phase of national didactic historiography: the Summary of the History of Brazil, Henrique Luis de Bellegarde Niemeyer, 1831, and the Compendium of the History of Brazil, José Ignacio Abreu e Lima, published in 1843.
