The present study has the aim to give a general view of the historical and conceptual issues which deal with the concept of globalisation and its effects on the patterns of the relationship between science and society as appears in the works of the sociologists Anthony Guiddens, David Held, Anthony McGrew and Nicolau Sevcenko. Based on these reflections on modernity, globalisation and the relationship between science and society, we examined the cultural and scientific literacy level which are required for insertion in contemporary society. The analyses proved that in growing fields of social life, citizens are summoned to intervene in decisions about issues in which experts do not have the "right answer".
