Abstract

MADEIRA, Iza Andrielle Batista Duarte; DAMASCENO, Alberto; ALMEIDA, Karla Nazareth Corrêa de  and  SILVA, Lucas dos Santos da. "WELL CONFORMED, ROBUST AND HEALTHY": EDUCATION AND THE PRESENCE OF BLACK AND MIXED RACE PEOPLE IN THE COMPANY OF APPRENTICE MARINERS OF PARÁ. Eccos Rev. Cient. [online]. 2022, n.61, e21624.  Epub Feb 09, 2024. ISSN 1983-9278.  https://doi.org/10.5585/eccos.n61.21624.

The objective of this article is to identify the presence of black and mixed-race people in the “Companhia de Aprendizes Marinheiros do Pará”, as well as to understand the different aspects of the instruction offered by this institution in the period from 1866 to 1888. The guiding question was to know the main aspects of the instruction offered by the Companhia de Aprendizes da Marinha in Pará to blacks and browns, in order to identify the presence of these subjects as students of the Company. To this end, we carried out historical-documentary research using sources from the “Arquivo Público do Estado do Pará (APEP)”, which were treated by the evidentiary method, by which we analyze generally imperceptible information. We have observed how the presence of children in military institutions was a way to supply the needs of the armed forces and to take underprivileged minors off the streets; and how the Company, besides instructing and training black children, also acted as an institution for "correction" of individuals considered "undisciplined". Instruction and training in the Company, aimed at the black population of blacks and browns, were imposed by the authorities, police chiefs and judges of orphans, and emphasized an education with ideals of civilizing these children, aiming their usefulness to the nation.

Keywords : schooling of the black population; history of “paraense”; education; imperial period..
