This article is an excerpt from the dissertation and thesis presented to the Master's and Doctorate Program in Education at the Universidade Nove de Julho (PPGE-UNINOVE), with the central themes of health education in the theme of realistic simulation in nursing. In this text, the objective was to contextualize nursing education in contemporary times, using realistic simulation as a teaching method. The methodology used was a literature review taking into account the central themes. Its structure has an introduction with a brief description of the nursing profession and its characteristics, teaching in nursing and realistic simulation. In the second part, the development with the entire literature review conceptualizing health education, teaching by competences, contemporary nursing and the use of the active methodology titled as realistic simulation. The conclusion, as the last structure, understood that nursing seeks constant evolution in the use of technology for the improvement and qualification of teaching and the provision of health services, with simulation being the best teaching method for education, qualification and improvement, and training.
