Abstract

ANTONIOLI, Camyla  and  EISENBERG, Zena. The autonomy of people with intellectual disability: a literature review. Rev. Educ. Espec. [online]. 2023, vol.36, e68742.  Epub Apr 24, 2024. ISSN 1984-686X.  https://doi.org/10.5902/1984686x68742.

The autonomy of people with disabilities is a relevant issue for the fields of education, psychology and human rights. This paper characterizes theoretical and empirical studies that guide a discussion on the autonomy of people with intellectual disabilities. A narrative literature review covering 18 articles published between 2010 to 2020 is presented. The analyzed works were organized into three categories: theoretical perspectives, target audience of the study, and the concept of autonomy. Results of the present review shown that two theoretical frameworks were pointed out: Disability Studies and the Self-Determination Theory. The articles analyzed gave relevance to the perspective of the interdependencies to support the discussion on autonomy. Therefore, it is argued that the relationships of care and support play a fundamental role in the development and encouragement of the autonomy of people with intellectual disabilities. It was concluded that, in the recent years, the Disability Studies perspective on the interdependencies have been fostering the debate on the autonomy of people with intellectual disabilities, in national and international research.
