Abstract: Physical education was one of the concerns of medical thinking in the city of Rio de Janeiro during century XIX. In this paper we will discuss representations about physical education in two journals of the Imperial Academy of Medicine between 1870 and 1889. We are interested in asking representations and discussions about the theme of physical education, during the period of 1870 to 1889. From the analysis of the sources it is perceived that physical education was related to a concern with the formation of the Brazilian Nation. Hygiene should create the grammar of how to create the Brazilian people through physical education.
