The calculus of fractions is considered one of the most scaring items of the school curriculum although it is used during the whole schooling process not only Mathematics, but also in other domains such as Physics, Chemistry and Biology. This survey investigates the signification models elaborated by teenagers and adults when solving problems involving fractions. The study showed that only a small amount of the interviewees is able to elaborate a full explanation to a problem involving the calculus of fractions. Most of them just present partial or incorrect explanations based on the perception and on the incomprehension of the relation part/ whole.
