This paper contribution focuses on the collective reflection about the affirmative action theme and the higher education quota system in Brazil. Starting with a case study of the newly created Federal University of the ABC (UFABC), this article tries to answer whether there was an effective increase on the number of students and their diversification on a social basis in São Paulo’s Greater ABC region; if there were institutional changes for the new students; and if those changes did reflect in the institutional pedagogic project. The short experience at the UFABC demonstrates that the simple adoption of the (social and racial) quota system isn’t enough for the diversification of the Higher Education social basis, but that it could contribute to the effective promotion of changes in the institutional and organizational structure of the Brazilian universities.
