Abstract

In this paper, we defend the thesis that education is one of the fundamental subjetcs of Lima Vaz’s reflection. We propose to show in which way, for him, the ethos plays an important role in the formation of the moral consciousness and personality. In the first place, we will explain in what sense education can be understood as a transversal theme that runs through the author’s works, although education is not the main theme of any work of Lima Vaz. In addition we will explain the role of ethos in the constitution of character. The ethos is coextensive with culture. When the person is socialized he or she learns a language can be introduced into the religion traditions and internalize conduct rules. On the one hand, the ethos has an important role at the character and personality formation. The community educates the individuals. It is responsible for them. On the other hand, the ethical habit guarantees the permanence of the ethos. Therefore, the person is also responsible for his or her actions and the ethos maintenance. Finally, we will show that the crisis of ethos and tradition makes necessary adopting a reflexive posture. It becomes necessary to take distance and evaluate concrete ethos. The relation between the person and ethos is not completely determined. The person can always oppose the traditions and ask their value. Moreover, when traditions are in crisis is necessary to rediscover a new orientation to action through the logos exercise. This orientation must be able to lead the person to the realization of the good.
