Abstract

CASTRO, Fabio Caprio Leite de. The risks of degeneration of contemporary democracy - social atomization and totalitarian discourse. Conjectura: filos. e Educ. [online]. 2018, vol.23, n.spe3, pp.366-385.  Epub Sep 02, 2019. ISSN 2178-4612.  https://doi.org/10.18226/21784612.v23.dossie.17.

This article proposes an analysis of the risks of degeneration of contemporary democracy in three points. In the first point, we return to the theme of the possibility of degeneration of democracy according to the perspective of Plato and Aristotle in order to present their elementary traits. In the second point, we analyze the thinking of Alexis de Tocqueville, particularly the way in which he dealt with the threats to democracy within the framework of nineteenth-century political liberalism. We try to show in a third point that the contemporary scenario demands highlighting the effects produced by the new media and the return of a totalitarian discourse. We have used some texts chosen by Baudrillard and Rancière in order to better explain how current threats to democracy are intertwined with consumer society, new media and the return of a totalitarian discourse.

Keywords : Democracy; Tyranny; Social atomization; Totalitarianism.
