Abstract

TAVARES, Maria Tereza Goudard. The political question of Popular Education: what can a book do 40 years later?. Conjectura: filos. e Educ. [online]. 2022, vol.27, e0220058.  Epub Apr 30, 2024. ISSN 2178-4612.  https://doi.org/10.18226/21784612.v27.e0220058.

In the course of 40 years of Popular Education in Brazil, we have learned that what grounds and gives meaning to the universality of social life is the feeling of belonging and the right to memory. Everyone should have the right to the memory. And this is the simple objective of the present article, woven and woven in the pain of mourning of people close to us and of the innumerable people who, in Brazil, already account for more than 667,000 deaths, bereaving families from Oiapoque to Chuí. The right to memory is thought of here as a right that is constituted at the counterpoint of a society that is nourished by daily erasure and silencing, in which the memory of the vanquished does not serve as a counter-memory device, and memories of the struggles fought for democracy, freedom, the confrontations of social inequalities, and the struggles for justice in the countryside and in the city. And to reconstruct this relationship with life, especially in this pandemic context, of so many losses and mourning, I bring to memory a seminal book, a classic book, which for over 40 years has been crossing, with its epistemic and political power, the field of Brazilian and Latin American Popular Education. It is the work The Political Question of Popular Education (BRANDÃO, 1980), whose impact and reverberation still deserve to be discussed and expanded among us, especially because of the challenges that (re) actualize themselves in the field of Brazilian popular education.
