Abstract

SANTOS, Ademir Valdir dos. School exercise books as ethno-historical artifacts. Rev. Bras. Hist. Educ [online]. 2018, vol.18, e028.  Epub June 01, 2018. ISSN 2238-0094.  https://doi.org/10.4025/rbhe.v18.2018.e028.

Abstract: The research is based on ethnographic methodological perspectives, from which derive the characterization of school exercise books as components of an ethno-history. Graphic elements produced in a chronological arc from the 1920s to the present day are analyzed. The documentary corpus consists of school exercise books that combine school and non-school uses: two school exercise books of memories, a questionnaire school exercise book, a school exercise book built by an artisan criveira and two school exercise books of recipes. It is shown that each school exercise book is a cultural element, constituent of modes of expression and elaboration of meanings. Results indicate that school exercise books are sources where ethnohistorical elements outbreak, being artifacts that compose stories.

Keywords : material culture; school; ethnography.
