Abstract: Examination of the manuals Noções de sociologia [Concepts of sociology] (1935) and Educação (história da pedagogia). Problemas actuaes [Education (history of pedagogy). Current Iissues] (1937), by Rev. Mothers Peeters & Cooman, for the purpose of understanding the Catholic proposals in the cultural sphere, particularly based on the confessional Normal Schools from 1935, the time of publication of the first work analyzed, to 1971, when there were changes in teacher education in Brazil. The sources of research included subject manuals, papal encyclicals, pastoral letters, Catholic printed material, documents related to the trajectory of the authors, etc. The manuals analyzed explicitly expressed a position encompassing Catholicism through opposition to the ideas of the liberal sphere of that time.
