Abstract

SANGENIS, Luiz Fernando Conde  and  MAINKA, Peter Johann. Franciscan presence and Jesuit supremacy in the field of History and History of Education in the colonial era - a diagnosis in historiographical research from the analysis of the CBHE of the SBHE. Rev. Bras. Hist. Educ [online]. 2019, vol.19, e061.  Epub May 01, 2019. ISSN 2238-0094.  https://doi.org/10.4025/rbhe.v19.2019.e061.

The analysis of the nine editions’ Annals of the Brazilian Conferences on History of Education (CBHE) of the Brazilian Society of History of Education (SBHE), after 20 years of existence, has led us to conclude that a small number of researches have thematized Brazilian colonial period: only 26 works. Almost all of these works have dealt centrally with the work of members of the Society of Jesus and used exclusively Jesuit sources, despite the historical, evangelizing and educational activity of other religious orders that have been present in Brazil since the 16th century, namely the Franciscan Order and its branches, center of our interest. The aim of this study was to problematize this majority choice among the researchers, regarding the temporal demarcation and the selection of the historiographical sources.

Keywords : Franciscans; Jesuits; historiographical sources; temporal demarcation.
