Abstract: This paper presented a study on the traces of mathematics to teach and for teaching in a specific context of the ginásios vocacionais in São Paulo, Brazil. Evidence was sought to identify and characterize professional knowledge in the new proposals for teaching produced by teachers in the courses conducted in the 1960s, influenced by the Modern Mathematics Movement. The study was guided by the question: In what way is the knowledge for teaching mathematics taught by the teachers of the ginásio vocacional in São Paulo in the 1960s? The theoretical foundation is based on studies of the history of education and cultural history. The primary sources used belong to the collection of the Center for Documentation and Scientific Information of PUC SP. The theme ‘Rational Number’ was chosen, for which it was concluded that the knowledge for teaching Mathematics in these institutions was constructed and articulated with the teaching practice, systematized and objectified for the school culture.
