Abstract

HASEGAWA, MIRIAN  and  BOCK, ANA MERCÊS BAHIA. THE STUDENTS’ SUBJECTIVITY ON INTERNET’S AGE. Rev. Comunic [online]. 2016, vol.23, n.2, pp.7-27. ISSN 2238-121X.  https://doi.org/10.15600/2238-121X/comunicacoes.v23n2p7-27.

Aiming to study the interaction between technology and subjectivity, we researched the relationship of young people with Internet by analyzing the meanings constructed by two students from different social classes through their Internet use. Assuming that in order to understand human beings’ relationship with technology we need to analyze this relationship within their socio-economic and cultural context, social inequality was considered as a determining factor in influencing these interactions. Based on the study analysis, we verified that social inequality defined the diversity of ICT’ uses achieved by these students but still the students’ interviews pointed to similar meanings and contradictions experienced through Internet use, such as the possibility of letting off their feelings and the fear of exposure. Therefore, we conclude that Internet access is an important condition to avoid increasing social inequality in Brazil.
