We sustain a transversal approach of the teaching/learning of the mother tongue, including two directions: the important role played by the mother tongue in social integration, namely in what concerns academic success in all content areas – being a teacher of Portuguese – and the contribution of the teaching/learning process of other content areas to a better performance in the mother tongue – being a teacher in Portuguese. Taking into account the second direction of our research, we promoted an exploratory study, in order to determine how one could attain this aim while teaching sciences in grades where each teacher is responsible for a single course. The analysis of documents that control the teaching of Natural Sciences in Portugal allowed us to prove that it is feasible. As a matter of fact, there are competencies related to the correct use of the mother tongue that can be developed in the classes of this course, if the teachers follow the guidelines provided by the educational authorities.
