This study is based on a documentary analysis of teachers’ opinion about the possible causes for the failure in the discipline of Physics and Chemistry in secondary education over the last 80 years, in Portugal. The results indicate, among others, two causes: long lists of contents to teach and large number of students per class. Despite of the implementation of several reforms in the education system, in order to improve student learning in this discipline, the perceptions of teachers about the causes of failure persist unchanged. Possible reasons for these results are discussed.
