The school failure would be associated with the gender of the students? A survey made in two schools of Mangaratiba (RJ), for period of nine years and with all their students (N = 10.338), separating them by sex and school situation, indicated a statistically significant association between sex and failure, the boys fail more. What would be the plausible explanations? From the analysis of 82 interviews and the Livros de Ocorrências (Books of Occurrences), it was obtained the justification of the social actors for good student, which presents a set of qualities coincident with what it is said to be female: obedience, passivity, neatness, accuracy and good behavior
