This article is the result of a doctoral thesis whose purpose was to know about the care practices directed to poor children in the city of Uberaba (MG) between 1920 and 1964. However, the article presented here aimed to identify the discursive constructions about these children in the local press in the first half of the 20th century. The methodology used established the dialectic between the local and national context, in order to understand how the circulating discourses in the country reverberated in the city. It was concluded that the press encouraged utilitarian and hygienist practices that, in a way, influenced society.
