Abstract

PAIXAO, Alexandro Henrique  and  PAULILO, André Luiz. From academies to small grocery stores: the circulation of novels in Colégio Pedro II and in the Portuguese Subscription Library between 1850 and 1880. LTP [online]. 2017, vol.35, n.71, pp.137-161. This article discusses the circulation of novels from the study of the book catalogs of Colégio Pedro II and the Portuguese Subscription Library between 1850 and 1880 in Rio de Janeiro. Two opposing places of the diffusion of literature in the Brazilian Empire are highlighted here, with the following purposes: first, to present the way the novel was included in secondary education and the conditions of its appropriation; second, to analyze the culture of the novel in the Portuguese Subscription Library as a space for the preparation of public readers and oriented also for educational purposes. Finally, the conclusions suggest the differences between these two places of reading.
