This paper presents the experience that took place during doctoral research conducted in six settlements in the state of São Paulo, from June to October 2012, in which the theoretical framework of popular education was used as a methodological approach. With this objective in mind, the research draws upon the works of authors specializing in popular education theories, specifically those by Paulo Freire. The aim is to present a non-traditional research methodology proposing a new investigative format that takes into account collaboration, solidarity, and the partnership forged between researchers and research subjects. The most relevant aspect of this methodology is not the research results but the educational process that takes place throughout the investigative process. This methodological approach emerged during the four-year period of doctoral research, in which the PhD student accompanied the subjects/collaborators of the research throughout their higher education. This shared social interaction led to strengthened bonds of trust and respect, which allowed for the application of this methodology, based on Paulo Freire´s concepts of dialogue, awareness and experiential knowledge. Through the use of this methodological approach it is possible to understand and apply, in practice, the concepts and theory of popular education.
