New Public Management has become the main reference when it comes to building educational policies worldwide. However, various studies have shown that the managerialism promoted by this model is strongly linked to the promotion of authoritarianism as a management mode. Chile has been considered an emblematic case of implementation of the New Public Management in education. This article discusses how managerialism constitutes the position of the school director in the Chilean case through the analysis of two recent educational policies: the Framework for Good Teaching and Directive Leadership, and the recent Law that strengthens the faculties of principals of educational establishments in matters of school coexistence. As can be seen, the results confirm that the boundaries between managerialism and authoritarianism are blurred. This should worry researchers and political managers, considering the wide diffusion of managerial models.
