Abstract

“The lamp of the Esquina” was the first gay newspaper with political engagement in Brazil, becoming a reference in the debate on gender issues in the 1970s during the military dictatorship, commonly called Brazilian left has engaged in the dispute that involved a range of social and political issues. However, starting from the reports of “The Lantern”, the left’s shares at the time, referring to LGBT demands, may be questionable. Thus, this article aims to analyze the 47 newspaper editions searching for content that evidence of the tensions between the left and the LGBT movement in the period in which it was printed. Today most of the left acts in defense of sexual freedom and against gender oppression. However, through this analysis, it was observed that LGBT causes were the last to be understood as policy issues by the left of the time.
