The evaluation of innovative projects calls for the adoption of an approach which takes into account its dynamic and dialectic nature. Thus, ethnography, in so far as it consists of a flexible research and evaluation approach easily adapted to field specificities, can offer a significant contribution to the evaluation of innovations. This article introduces the principles, procedures and techniques commonly applied in ethnographic valuations and resorts to two case studies - one of educational innovation and the other of social innovation - to analyze the use of this approach. Even though they belong to two different fields of studies, these cases of innovation reveal many similarities at their implementation level, based on the interaction between the "existent order" and the "new order". Finally, it is argued that evaluations conducted from an ethnographic approach foster participants' reflection over their views, altitudes and practice and set the basis for a permanent questioning about the evolution of a given innovation.
