In Brazil, annual National Household Surveys (PNADs), since 1987, ask the respondents how they consider themselves in relation to their ethnic group (white, Afro-american, mulatto, Asian). These data are used in this paper to present the evolution of educational indicators referring to access to school and the flow of students through the educational system for subpopulations characterized by ethnic groups. The Brazilian National Assessment of Basic Education (SAEB), in 1995, introduced a questionnaire with some variables about the student, among them how the student considers himself in relation to his(her) ethnic group. Using the results of SAEB, we compare the proficiency distribution in mathematics and Portuguese language (reading), for subpopulations of students from the assessed grades characterized by these ethnic groups. We look for relationships between these variables with socio-economical variables.
